Interested in taking part in social work research?
"I am undertaking, as part of an MA in Advanced Social Work Studies, a research project entitled 'A study exploring social worker's understandings of how their life experiences have impacted upon their career choice and subsequent practice'. I have chosen this question as I have worked with a number of social workers over the years, many of whom have shared with me that they experienced adversity during their lives, which led me to consider whether there may be a relationship between adverse life experiences and the career choice of social worker. In addition it made me question whether life experiences increase social worker's understanding and sensitivity to the needs of those they work and make them better equipped for the job that they do.

Socialwork2000 has very kindly offered to assist me in this research by allowing me to seek participants via this newsletter and by agreeing to send out my information sheet to their locums. The research findings, however, will not identify individuals to socialwork2000 nor share information with any other third party. The information sheet will set out the detail of the research and clarify issues of confidentiality.

If you are interested in taking part...and I very much hope you are...please click here to email me."

One short article caught my attention this month :

UCAS statistics show a 41.3% increase
Social work degree applications have soared by more than 40% in the last year according to figures released by the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) last week.

There were 52,238 applications to study for a degree in social work (as of 22 January 2010), an increase of 41.3% on last year's figures. This statistic has added significance as social work is also in the top 10 subject choices for all UCAS degree applications.

It is encouraging to see such an appetite to join the profession in light of all the adverse media attention over the last year.
