Chicago

We had another memorable night at Wycombe Swan last month when a party of 25 SocialWork 2000 locums and staff gathered to see the musical Chicago.

Roxie is a chorus girl who has murdered her lover but manages to get acquitted with the help of her sleazy lawyer, Billy Flynn. She teams up with murderess Velma to form an unusual nightclub act, which they hope will keep them in the public eye.

Cheeky chappie Gary Wilmot is definitely not the obvious choice for slick lawyer Billy Flynn. But he proved that he can 'razzle dazzle' with the best of them.

Chicago has attracted a huge diversity of names over the years and the latest minor-celeb to 'roll her stockings down' is former Eastender Emma Barton in the role of Roxie Hart. She had moments of brilliance particularly during Me and My Baby and with her wide eyes has the endearing quality required. Twinnie-Lee Moore had Velma Kelly's disdainful but sexy arrogance down pat and held the audiences gaze whenever she was on stage.

If you've seen the film and are thinking of giving this a miss - think again.
Not only are there more cracking songs but there's nothing like a live performance.
ASWEB Audit

SocialWork 2000 are very proud and active members of the Association of Social Work Employment Businesses.

Maggie Whymark who worked for SocialWork 2000 up to December 2008 and now works independently tendered for and won the contract to externally audit all the members of ASWEB. She came to our offices on 11th June to audit SocialWork 2000 and the tests were very stringent and required standards which are considerably higher than are required by legislations. We were impressed by the rigour and look forward to working with ASWEB in contributing to the development of these standards. We were delighted to pass the audit on the day.

Click here to visit the ASWEB site is well worth a visit.

Here is a brief synopsis:
The Association of Social Work Employment Businesses (ASWEB) was set up in April 2007 by a committed group of social work employment businesses as a vehicle to safeguard the professional development interests of their locum Social Workers.

These standards ensure that any clients working in partnership with ASWEB members can benefit from and be assured of a value added service which offers quality control and prides itself on good practice. The standards form the basis both for the initial and the annual audit.

Although maintaining these standards is not a cost free exercise, we acknowledge that as responsible businesses recruiting social workers to work with some of the most disadvantaged people in society, special efforts must be made to ensure that standards are the highest attainable. It also goes without saying that applying best practice through high standards is a strong business model for generating long term growth and income.

The Children, Schools and Families Committee was established on 6 November 2007 and membership nominated on 8 November 2007. The formal remit of the Committee is to examine the administration, expenditure and policy of the Department for Children, Schools and Families. The Committee's remit also covers the work of Ofsted and non-departmental public bodies.

On 24th June, James Brown had the honour of attending a Select Committee inquiry into the training of children's social workers as a witness. Other members of the panel were Sue Berelowitz (Deputy Children's Commissioner), Enid Hendry (Head of Training, NSPCC) and Cathy Ashley (Chief Executive, Family Rights Group). The Minister, Baroness Morgan, also gave evidence. Kate Thompson and several members of ASWEB joined James to support him on the day. This was a first for a Social Work agency to be invited to contribute their views to a parliamentary debate and we hope it is the beginning of a continuing dialogue.

The following links are a fascinating insight into the workings of parliament and well worth a visit.
