Mags, Shelli and James enjoyed a night at the dogs in Henlow withour locums on Thursday 24th June. They enjoyed a fish and chip supper all round with races every half an hour.
With a table right next to the start, everyone had a great view of the track and the runners. The night was an overall success, withraces being won, locums meeting friends old and new, and with everyone going away looking forward to the next event.
Well done Mags and Shelli for organising a successful locum event .
We look forward to feedback from the next event - MK Dons vs West Ham!

Who would you take with you to a desert island and why? My Husband,so that I can still keep an eye on him!! :-)
If you could choose a superpower what would it be? Foreknowledge- so that I will be able to avoid and prepare for all the unpleasant things of life before they occur.
Where is your favourite place to eat? TGI Fridays - Excellent Jack Daniels ribs and shrimp
What is your favourite film? This is tricky,I love films and have a long list of the favourite ones. However at the moment I think I will say ''The Book of Eli''because I have just watched this one.
Are you a cat or a dog person? I think I am both,I have traits of both these in me I believe. I am a bit introverted as well as extroverted depending with what it is we are talking about. I am a homebody, I like quiet places. I am also self-conscious and sensitive. On the other hand I am an eager, open and unembarrassed person.
Do you eat cold cereal at night? No, I dislike cereals in general.
Kill the spider or let it out? It depends how big it is, if small let it out, if big kill it because it might bite you whilst trying to let it out.
If you could be someone else for a day who would you be? Myself. I have never wished to be somebody else. I love my life and just the way it has been and it is. I will probably still love it the way it's going to be.
Where is your favourite place? Zimbabwe - it holds most of the best memories of my life. Home is best hey..
What would wear to a fancy dress party? It depends with the theme of the party, if general- I think I would wear something from the 70's. I like the idea of the hipster flares, platform shoes and hippie hairstyles.
Which song would you sing at Karaoke? You Raise Me Up - Westlife
What makes you laugh? Comedies, funny films and during times spent with family and friends.
Are you an indoor or an outdoor person? I am a bit of both depending with the weather, especially in England. However, in environments that are sunny most days of the year, majority of the time is spent outdoors. I love my vitamin D (Sun).
Describe yourself in 3 words? Caring, sensitive and talkative
I am a Social Worker because... I feel I have a lot to contribute to humanity. I have been given a heart and desire of wanting to see people function the best way they can in their environments and being a social worker was one way I could apply my desire to practice.

| ASWEB Initial Assessment training... |
On May 28th Gemma Kewley (a qualified social worker since 2003) attended the ASWEB training day for social workers already working in (or who are interested in working with), a Children and Families Referral and Assessment Team. She felt that she came away with a clearer understanding of legislative timescales and guidance for completion of an assessment. Gemma was also reminded about the importance of child centred practice, clear recording and of evidence based practice. Through talking with other social workers attending the course that day, Gemma was reminded that every local authority has a slightly different way of working - which means however much training or reading you do, nothing can prepare you more than doing the job itself!
From a personal perspective what she found most interesting was the trainer. Gemma found the trainer's current grounding in real, everyday practice was very reassuring. Although Gemma loved theory and research, and acknowledged the important role they play, she does feel that nothing beats good quality practical social work skills.
Gemma would recommend this training because - 'it won't tell you exactly how to complete an initial assessment but it will give you a good basis to build on. The trainer's style was refreshingly pragmatic and reminded us to feel proud about our role as social workers, not always easy, but when done well, we do a very important job!'
Gemma's social work background consists of working in various teams including Leaving Care, Physical Disability (Adults) and HIV. She is currently taking some time out to look after her little boy, but does miss working with service users and the buzz of a social work office. Gemma has started to attend training again to start networking, and to explore local social work options. She is keen to make sure she keeps up to date with current social work practice, both for her own development and for her GSCC registration.
Gemma added that 'fortunately I recently discovered Social Work 2000:they have been very supportive and provided me with information on various training opportunities'.

| Cancer Research, Race for Life in Milton Keynes... |
|
On Sunday 6th June Shelli set off with her sister Maria on a 10k Race for Life walk for Cancer Research in Milton Keynes. All did not go to plan however, and they ended up running the 5K race due to lining up in the wrong area! Panic set in when they heard the commentator count down from 10 for the 'runners' to start.
They completed the race in 55 mins - not bad for Shelli who jogs once a week and her sister who has never run in her life.
They felt even more embarrassed when they went though the finish line only to be congratulated by the commentator for completing the 10k race (running) in 1hr 7 mins!!
Well done to our Milton Keynes Administrator and her sister.
