Thousands of social workers needed to implement Laming report

A study by Loughborough University, commissioned by the Local Government Association (LGA), has examined the implications for councils of implementing all 58 recommendations made in Laming's report, The Protection of Children in England: a Progress Report. This article makes very interesting reading as it explores the implications for the recruitment of social workers. This comes at a time when you will already be experiencing a dearth of social workers in the market place.

For more on Lord Laming's report and the implications for councils and information from an LGA conference last week click here.

Social workers needed for media interviews

BASW is issuing an urgent call to frontline social workers or managers across the UK to share their experiences of the work they do in TV, radio and print interviews.

The Association is hoping that practitioners will come forward to publicise the work they do and challenge some of the inaccurate perceptions of the profession.

Highlighting examples of good practice and social work expertise, as well as the challenges social workers face on a daily basis, is vital to an ongoing process of informing the public and the media about the profession...

Life in the freezer

As we turn our thoughts away from work for a few days do have a read of this article from one of our SocialWork 2000 locums. Not only is it inspirational but there are some truly stunning photographs worth looking at.

My name is Gary Baxter and I have been working for SocialWork2000 since around October last year. I was originally very worried about the prospect of agency working as up until that point I had always been employed full time. However, I have found the flexibility extremely useful in allowing me to spend more time following my other passion; wildlife photography.

I have just returned from an amazing voyage around the Antarctic Peninsula in search of images to add to my website. These included penguins and leopard seals, but also some incredible land and sea-scapes. The quality of light in this last pristine wilderness has to be seen to be believed.

I am now compiling images for a Licentiate membership of the Royal Photographic Society and putting together an exhibition of my work which will hopefully go on display later in the year. Sales from my website have started to take off recently and I have been asked to supply images in DVD format for several customers. There may be a book in the pipeline and a future trip to Australia is in the planning stages following discussion with a researcher in Tasmania.

Don’t believe it is all fun and games though. We sailed through the Drake Passage in some of the worst storms ever recorded since our ship was put into service and on the return leg of the voyage passed through a hurricane!

BASW offers to help make a college work

BASW presented its case for an 'independent and democratically accountable' college

"Let us help you make the College work," was the message from BASW chief executive Hilton Dawson after addressing a meeting of the National College steering group, chaired by the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE).

BASW presented its case for an "independent and democratically accountable" College to the steering group at a meeting on 22 March, where Mr Dawson explained: "BASW believes that the establishment of a College of Social Work represents a transforming moment when we can raise the status and standing of social work to give our profession the recognition it deserves. To ensure a UK College is successful, accountable, sustainable and independent it needs to be founded on the membership of social workers."
