West Side Story

It's been touring for 50 years but if you imagine that West Side Story is showing its age then think again.

The language used by the show's street gangs does sound quaintly old fashioned - they have "a rumble" instead of a fight and call adults "daddy-o" as though it's some kind of insult - there's no hint of rap or swearing.

At a time when gang warfare, tragic teen knife deaths and inter-race hostility is so frequently in the news, this tale of love and racial hatred among the Sharks and Jets of New York couldn't be more topical.

Created by the combined brains of Jerome Robbins, Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim from a book by Arthur Laurents, it took nine years to make the American stage and opened to mixed reviews.

But audiences everywhere took the musical to their hearts and last month our best ever attendance for a SocialWork 2000 Theatre Evening came to Milton Keynes Theatre and had the chance to experience its magic.

"Thank you so much for the theatre, it was a great show and a blast. I thoroughly enjoyed myself!!" - Jasvir

"Once again such a brilliant performance and a very enjoyable evening. It’s lovely to meet staff and locums, thanks to you all for such a great time and can't wait for the next." - Heather

Our next trip will be to Calendar Girls at the Wycombe Swan on 30th October
Social Work Positive Stories

Much has been written about social workers and their role in supporting and protecting vulnerable children and their families, some good and some not so, but it is most often the negative stories that stick in our minds.

The more balanced view, as anyone involved in social care knows, is frequently obscured by the minority of high profile cases which mushroom onto the news pages when they occur.

The Children’s Workforce Development Council CWDC are inviting social workers currently working with children and families in England to be vocal about their successes, and are working with M&M Communications to write 100 positive case studies to be used as part of a wider campaign to change opinions and recruit talented people to the profession.

I am sure this initiative will resonate with every Social Worker reading this newsletter. If you would like to read more or indeed contribute please click here.
Community Care Live - Children & Families 2008

Completing the required 15 days or 90 hours of PRTL, within a three year period, does not need to be difficult. Recording what you learn from workshops and plenary sessions when you attend Community Care Live Children & Families 08 will count as valuable hours towards achieving your PRTL requirements.

This year the event will be held at the Business Design Centre in Islington on 29th October. Doors open at 9.15 and the day finishes at 5pm. Always a good day out and a good reason to visit London and get away from day to day work and take the opportunity for reflection and learning.

Further details can be found at the Community Care Live website.
Life After Care

If the programme at Comm Care Live only tempts you for the morning there is a further FREE event at Central Hall Westminster on the same day...

'Life after care: how to improve services and outcomes for care leavers' is a free half-day seminar, organised by Children & Young People Now in conjunction with QA Research and National Care Leavers' Week, which will explore the gaps that remain in services for care leavers, often leaving them vulnerable and struggling to cope. Based on brand new research, this seminar considers the views of care leavers themselves on how services and support could be improved.
